◆ What is Specified Skilled Worker No. 2
To solve the
problem of serious labor shortage in many occupations, in April 2019, the
Japanese government decided to set up a "Specified Skilled Worker"
regime, which allows foreigners to work in Japan in occupations that foreigners
were previously not allowed to do with other regular visas. In addition, this
visa allows foreigners to continue to do jobs that previously worked for
foreigners under the Technical Intern visa for a long period after the completion
if the Technical Intern Training Program.
There are two
types of residence status for "Specified Skilled Worker". “Specified
Skilled Worker No. 1” is a status of residence for foreigners who engage in
work that requires skills that require a considerable degree of knowledge or
experience belonging to a specific industrial field, and “Specified Skilled
Worker No. 2” is a status of residence for foreigners who work in a specific
industrial field that requires a considerable degree of knowledge or
experience. This is a status of residence for foreigners who engage in work
that requires highly skilled skills.
The
"Specified Skilled Worker" regime was approved as "Specified
Skilled Worker No. 1" with a stay period of 5 years with 12 occupations
(previously 14 occupations) and "Specified Skilled Worker No. 2" with
a stay period of another 5 years with 12 occupations (previously 2 occupations)
with better benefits than the Technical Intern Training visa although the
occupations do not change due to higher requirements for skills and Japanese
language proficiency.
